Orcas Observed Attacking Grey Whales In Alaska posted by Captain Rob on 06/01/08


For the past five seasons, Barrett-Lennard and his Alaskan colleague, researcher Craig Matkin of the North Gulf Oceanic Society in Homer, have been studying a unique and previously unknown population of mammal-eating killer whales in the northwest Gulf of Alaska.

Their work is now shedding light on the orcas of the north Pacific, revealing unexpected twists in their natural history and showing how their behaviour affects a wide range of other species.

Among the novel aspects to these killer whales are their songs, the mysterious circular scars on their bodies and their uncanny ability to hunt young grey whales.

Nearly half of the land base of Haida Gwaii will rest within protected areas as a result of a strategic land-use agreement announced December 12, 2007 by Premier Gordon Campbell and Guujaaw, President of the Council of the Haida Nation. This agreement allows for sustainable economic development opportunities for the benefit of all British Columbians.

The winds off the coast of Haida Gwaii are some of the strongest and most consistent in Canada and can provide inexhaustible, clean and reliable energy.

This story is clipped from the David Suzki Foundation website. Bottom trawling in Hecate Strait has had a big impact on base of the food chain fish populations such as the Pacific Sandlance (Needlefish). Needlefish are a dietary staple of salmon and many other species.
